The Wrist is the joint between the bones of the forearm (Radius and Ulna) and the metacarpal bones of the hand. It is composed of 8 bones situated together by a complex configuration of ligaments. Ailments of the wrist may be due to direct injury (causing ligament sprains) or chronic inflammatory or arthritic conditions. Localized pain may be aching, but other symptoms may involve tingling or even numbness of the 1st to 3rd fingers.

What Treatments Exist For Wrist Pain?

Dr. Todd Koppel has been aiding patients with various ailments of the wrist for many years. A majority of treatments are conservative (wrist splint, anti-inflammatories, topical compound medications and rest). Chronic pain, however, can be successfully treated by both conventional interventional therapies (injection and ablation therapy) and regenerative treatments can alleviate refractory conditions due to tendinopathy and ligament injuries. Surgery may be necessary in some cases for carpal tunnel syndrome, if other treatments fail.

Diagnosing Your Wrist Pain

A comprehensive history will greatly aid in determining the diagnosis of wrist conditions. Xray and ultrasound examinations may be helpful, and MRI studies are infrequently needed. Nerve testing is useful in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome.
